Feather Meal
Feather Meal is one of the highest percentage sources of natural organic Nitrogen, which is essential for plant vegetative growth. Feather Meal breaks down more slowly in soil than Blood Meal, resulting in a natural slow release. Because Feather Meal is a potent source of Nitrogen, caution should be taken in its use as it is possible to burn your plants if over-applied, however the natural slow release characteristics of Feather Meal mitigate this risk compared to Blood Meal.
WHAT IS IT AND WHERE IS IT FROM?
Feather Meal is a by-product of animal agriculture, primarily from chickens. Feathers collected from slaughterhouses is hydrolyzed1, sterilized, and dried with no other additives or processes. Frankia sources pure Feather Meal derived from the Alberta poultry industry.
Most Feather Meal is used in animal feed products, when its used as organic fertilizer it is diverted into the soil where its nutrients are broken down and absorbed by plants and the soil food web, rather than being fed back to animals. If you prefer to avoid animal by-products, locally sourced compost or plant meals such as Alfalfa Meal, Soybean Meal, Cottonseed Meal, or Neem Meal are good alternative sources of Nitrogen.
